It is with deepest Love & sorrow that the family of Verne Wellington Bissell (90) of 63 Heath Stage Terrace passed away at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield after suffering a stroke.
Born in Burke Vermont on April 24th 1932 he was the son of William R Bissell and Marion A (Spencer) Bissell.
He moved to Spencer Massachusetts in 1937 at 5 years old he attended Spencer Mass Schools and was a graduate of the David Prouty High School in 1950. From there on he went to college at Stockbridge UMass Amherst and studied agriculture.
He married the late Gail A Bissell on July 16th 1955 in North Brookfield Massachusetts. Together they shared 66 years of a beautiful marriage. He went on to Redwood City California and worked in carpentry until 1971. Then made his home in Charlemont Massachusetts. Where they owned and operated many properties.
Verne was a pillar to his community with his involvement at local Town meetings, food panty help and hosting many friends, or acquaintances for home cooked dinners of which he loved to prepare. Most of all he loved to bake. You could always stop by and there were always pies, muffins or cookies to enjoy.
Using his carpentry skills and his useful tips and advice along with his hardworking hands, he was always ready to lend a hand with building homes of which he built many throughout the years in the community.
He retired in 2007.
His passion was square dancing all around the United States with the love of his life. His favorite spot to hang out was in Eastport Maine where they would camp for many years, along with many friends.
Friends were everything to Verne of which he had many and he treasured all of them.
Verne was preceded in death by his loving wife: Gail A Bissell, Son: James T Bissell, his daughter: Stacy E Bissell.
His loving family he leaves behind includes his son Dr. Mark C. Bissell wife Sara of Union West Virginia, sisters: Beverly Care of Erving, MA, Patricia Burgees of Union West Virginia, and Sandra Whitman of Spencer MA.
His grandchildren; Jakob Bissell and his wife Samantha of Three Forks Montana, Brittany Bissell of Chicago, Luke Bissell and his wife Jordan of Greenfield Massachusetts. Joshua and Emily of South Carolina, two great grandsons Hudson and Anderson, one great granddaughter Finley and many nieces, nephews and cousins along with many more friends.
There will be a remembrance for Verne Bissell on October 23rd during the Sunday worship service at the Trinity Church with Pastor Marguerite Sheehan
