Sonia A. (Reid) Strawn, 81, of Coles Meadow Rd., passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Cooley-Dickinson Hospital.
Sonia was born in Troy, New York on October 8, 1939 the daughter of the Rev. Frank Jay and Mrs. Leona (Aldrich) Reid. Having earned a Master of Arts and a Master of Religious Education, Sonia served as a missionary for the United Methodist Church in Algeria for three years in the early 1960s and then in Korea for nearly 50 years. She worked closely with Korea’s first woman lawyer, Dr. Lee Tai Young as she advocated for women’s rights and democracy in South Korea. Sonia also taught at Ewha Womans University and the Methodist Theological University in Seoul for many years where her strong faith, courage, compassion and inclusivity made a profound impact on many students who have now become leaders all over the world.
Sonia was married to Dwight Strawn on June 5, 1965, with whom she shared 55 meaningful years. Sonia’s family also includes her daughters, Sarah and Lee-Ellen, their spouses Darren and Tim, and her grandchildren Elizabeth, Nicholas, Charlotte, Meena, and Emaline. In addition to her unwavering commitment to world issues of peace and justice, Sonia was foremost a committed mother and grandmother, and she always made time for good coffee, chocolate ice-cream, sunsets, and connecting with friends and family far and wide.
Due to the covid pandemic, a private family service will be held and her Celebration of Life service for the larger community will take place at the convenience of the family.
