Roger Rice Obituary

Roger W. Rice, 80, of Buckland, passed away on December 8, 2023 in Northampton, MA. He was born on February 6, 1943 in West Hawley, MA. Roger was a proud Father and even prouder Grandfather. He was ecstatic the last years of his life that he and his beloved cat Nanny got to live with his daughter Lurena, son-in-law Harry, granddaughter Jeanna, and bonus granddaughter Madison Taylor in Buckland, MA. Roger loved to spend time in Gill at his daughter’s Carrie and Daniel Shea’s house for a weekend every now and then.

In his earlier years, Roger played semi-pro baseball all around New England and was also a fantastic basketball player. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots. Roger loved playing golf and was a member of the Ashfield Community Golf Club. When he was no longer able to play, he would go for rides with his friend George Dole while they played.

Roger was a railroad man, working for the Boston and Maine railroad for 21 years. Even after retirement he remained passionate about the railroad. He also had various jobs throughout his life, but his favorite was working on dairy farms. He loved farming, cutting wood, and making maple syrup. His favorite farm was the Seldom Farm he had in Charlemont when his daughters were young. Roger had a deep affection for his Belgian horses Duke and Dolly, as well as various breeds of cows including Herefords, Holsteins, and his beloved Jerseys. He also had a variety of animals, including chickens, ducks, dogs, cats and even a Guinea Pig.

Roger will be remembered for his love of phone calls, visits, and mail. He cherished the laughter that filled the house when his lifelong friends Ronnie and Althea Dodge called. He considered Karen Spear as family and cherished the roast beef sandwiches they shared.

Roger is survived by his three daughters Lurena (Harry) Taylor, Carrie (Daniel) Shea, and Rebecca Rice, three grandchildren Kaitlin Rice, Joseph Dufresne, and Jeanna Taylor, brothers George Rice and David/Cy (Carol) Rice, and his beloved younger sister Paula Rice.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, David and Lida (Maynard) Rice, and his brother Walter Rice.

Roger served in the National Guard for six years. He was a graduate of Charlemont High School in 1963.
