Norman Earl Daby, Sr., 86 of Buckland, better known as Pete, passed away peacefully on the evening of December 19th with his son and daughters-in-law by his side.
He was born in Heath on August 30, 1938, the son of Norman and Julia (Stetson) Daby. Pete was well respected in the community for his amazing knowledge and work ethic. He was an independent business owner/operator who did site work and logged many properties over the years as well as plowed many town and state roads. He was often referred to as a “jack of all trades and a master of all.” He could tear apart an engine and put it back together, despite being vision impaired. He was known for purchasing pieces of equipment and rebuilding them so they were like new or even better. Until most recently, you would often see him enjoying chats and laughter with others at the local coffee shop.
Pete leaves behind his son Norman E. Daby Jr. and his wife Christine, his daughter-in-law Lori Daby, his grandsons Casey and Alexander Daby and Billy Hanson and his great-grandsons Parker Gallese and Maverick Daby. He also leaves his nieces Lisa Fleock (Jim), Sheila Tower (Larry), his nephews Jeff Wells (Amanda) and Russell Turcotte (Ellen) as well as sisters-in-law, Dot Parker and Barb Turcotte. He also leaves a large group of friends, some of whom stopped by regularly to check in and have a chat-Marilyn, Richard, Billy and Eva to name a few.
Pete is predeceased by his friend and ex-wife, Sandra Daby (2022), his eldest son, Steven Daby (2024) and his sister, Lou Coutu.
He was an animal lover so if you’d like to make a donation in his name, please choose T.J. O’Connor Animal Shelter, 627 Cottage St., Springfield, MA 01104.
Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Pete wanted no fanfare in his farewell so the family will have a private gathering at a later date to celebrate his life and share their many memories.
