Mary Ellen Hansen Obituary

Mary Ellen (Hazucha) Hansen of Smith Street, Greenfield, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday morning, July 14, 2024­­.   She was the daughter of George and Mary (Lesnick) Hazucha.  Mary Ellen was born September 15, 1942 in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Mary Ellen was a graduate of St. Francis deSales High School, attended West Virginia University, and graduated from Morgantown Business College with a Secretarial Stenographer degree.  Upon completion of a Civil Service exam, Mary Ellen went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. She worked in D.C. for three years and   from there she was assigned to the American Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, South America, where she worked for two and one half years.  She returned to Washington for two years and was then assigned to the American Embassy in the Dominican Republic.  At the end of her tour, she married Howard J. Hansen in the garden of the Ambassador’s Residence and went to live in Brattleboro, Vermont, with her husband.

Her husband’s employment took them to Miami, Florida, for six years.  Then in 1982 they moved to Greenfield, Ma.  At this time, Mary Ellen worked as a Personal Care Assistant for 16 years. 

Mary Ellen was an avid Bible student.  She was a member of Bible Study Fellowship for four years in Miami, Florida and Community Bible Study for 39 years in Massachusetts, where she served as a Bible Core Leader and Prayer Chairman.  She loved foreign travel as she traveled extensively throughout Europe, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.  Her travels also included Alaska, Asia, Africa, Canada, the Middle and Far East and Hawaii.  She also did extensive traveling in the USA. 

She is survived by two sons, Douglas, and his wife, Melissa of Stoneham, MA, and Craig, and his wife, Shireen, of Vienna, VA.  A brother, Robert Hazucha and his wife Sylvia, and a sister Margaret Hazucha, both in Morgantown, WV.  She has nieces and nephews and three adorable grandchildren, Alexandra Soraya (Ali) and Samuel Rylan (Sam) Hansen of Vienna, Virginia, and Cameron Joseph (CJ) Hansen of Stoneham, MA.  Mary Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Howard J. Hansen, April 2020 of 47 years.

Mary Ellen was a member of the Green River Bible Church in Greenfield, MA, where she served as Deaconess.  She was also involved in other church ministries.

Mary Ellen enjoyed Christian fellowship, cooking, reading, listening to music and playing games.  Swimming at the local YMCA was one of her pleasures.  She also enjoyed exercising and doing yard work.

With respect to Mary Ellen’s wishes, there will be no services, and she will be buried with Howard at the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA.
