Mary L. (Hill) (Johnston) Zeiner, 97, formerly of Summer St., passed away April 22, 2021.
Mary was born in Buckland on December 10, 1923 the daughter of Edward and Alice (Hayes) Hill. She was a graduate of Arms Academy in 1941 and attended the former Bay Path Institute in Springfield.
She spent most of her life in Shelburne Falls and was employed by March’s Pharmacy prior to her marriage to Charles Johnston in 1946. Charles predeceased her in 1985. She married Harold C. Zeiner in January 1990 in Greenfield, prior to his passing in June of that year.
Mary was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Shelburne Falls before moving to Greenfield and attending Blessed Sacrament. While at St. Joseph’s she taught religious education classes and was a member of the former Blessed Virgin Sodality.
She was a former member of the Deerfield Valley Arts Assoc., a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary Unit 8503 in Shelburne Falls. She was a Brownie Scout Mother and a coordinator of the first 2 Bike-A-Thons in Shelburne Falls for the benefit of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During the 1980’s she was a dental hygienist for Richard Parmett, DDS.
Her interests were painting, bird watching, gardening, reading, her pets, and especially her family.
Survivors include six sons; Thomas of Greenfield, John and his wife Gail of Colrain, Timothy of North Adams, Christopher and his wife Cheryl of Shelburne Falls, Kevin and James of Greenfield, two daughters; Mary and her husband Terry Rae Sullivan of Wildwood, FL, and Jacqueline and her husband Richard Howe of Shelburne Falls, thirteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. She also leaves a sister-in-law Katherine Geanacopulos of Pepperill, MA, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 1 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph’s Church, 34 Monroe Ave, Shelburne Falls with Rev. William Lunney, Pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in Arms Cemetery.
There will be calling hours prior to the Mass from 9:00 until 10:30 am at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls.
“Mary J-Z” will be greatly missed by her extended family at Charlene Manor where she lived for the past 6 years.
