Lucille Hawks Obituary

Lucille (Meader) Hawks, 96, of Greenfield died Tuesday, September 23, at Linda Manor Extended Care in Leeds. She was born in Rome, New York on October 19, 1928, daughter of Alice (Day) and Carleton Meader. The family moved when she was an infant to Ware, MA, then to Crown Point, NY, before settling in Greenfield in 1943.

Lucille graduated from Greenfield High School in 1946 and then attended Northampton Commercial College. She worked at the Greenfield Recorder-Gazette as the women’s page reporter and editor until her marriage to Albert G. Hawks in 1956.

Lucille was devoted to her family and loved having her grandchildren around and keeping tabs on those living further away as they grew. She was also a great lover of animals, with numerous dogs and cats throughout her life. Lucille was an avid knitter, often with multiple projects in progress at once, and she enjoyed taking local day trips and short overnight journeys to the Maine coast.

Besides her husband Albert Hawks, who died in 2005, Lucille is predeceased by her parents, her sister Vivian Hale, and her brother Forrest Meader. Survivors include sons Douglas and wife Donna, Lawrence and wife Shelly, Richard and wife Halima, and Gary and wife Andrea; daughter Catherine; nephew Mark Meader; grandchildren Samantha, Jennifer, Emily, Benjamin, Katelin, and Sarah; and great-grandchildren Leo, Hannah, Samantha, Briar, and Orion.

Services will be private. Burial will be in Green River Cemetery. Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home is overseeing the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dakin Humane Society in Springfield (www.dakinhumane.org).
