Conway- Leland K. Totman, 92, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2023 with his family by his side. He died on the family farm, in the home he spent his whole life.
Leland was born in Greenfield, MA on April 5, 1931 the son of Raymond and Mildred (Kingsbury) Totman. He was an excellent student and graduated from Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls near the top of his class.
Like many children who grow up on a family farm, Lee started working at a young age. He watched and learned from his father Raymond and over the years became knowledgeable about how to run a dairy farm. His father also taught him to be innovative in finding new ways to improve the day-to-day operations of the farm. Lee was always thinking about and embracing new approaches to best manage the farm and land. He was respected by many farmers in the area and they would often ask him his opinion on different projects. He was once referred to as “ a farmer's farmer”. Like other farms in the area, the Totman Farm was once a recipient of the “Green Pastures Award” for the top farm in the state. He was proud of that award but he was most proud of the heritage and legacy of the farm.
As much as he loved his farm, Lee did enjoy getting away for short periods of time to watch auto racing on the dirt tracks or going out for a snowmobile ride. He was one of the original founders of the Conway Snowmobile Club. It was a sport he enjoyed for decades and was riding until he was 90. Lee also served the town of Conway as an assessor for many years.
Lee’s beloved family includes his son Gary Totman and his wife Darcy Harriman of Conway, daughter Karen Totman and her husband Bob Green also of Conway, his grandchildren; Shauna Mizula (Baldomero Salinas Jimenez) of Conway, Katie Stamos (Paul Stamos) of Merrimac, MA, and Dale Totman of Conway, his great grandchildren; Marcos, Mayzara and Zabela Salinas-Mizula and Conner and Holly Stamos, his brother Conrad Totman of New Haven, CT, sisters Barbara Cutko of Biddiford Maine and Gail Moskow of Wilton, CT, and several nieces and nephews.
It was Lee’s wish for a graveside service, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11:00 am at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Conway.
There are no other services.
