Janet E. (Darling) Rooney

Janet E. (Darling) Rooney, 91, of Turnpike Rd., passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the home of her son David with whom she lived.

Janet was born in Greenfield, MA on September 24, 1930 to Dana L. Darling and Helen E. (Shibles) Darling.

She graduated from Greenfield High School, class of 1948. Janet was the lone twirler for the marching band one year and was known to toss the baton as high as the telephone poles and still catch it.

In her younger years Janet was a great ice skater and spent many hours at Highland Pond practicing. Janet along with her brother Dick, were members of the Moose Club Band and during her high school years she worked at the Lawler Theater and then after high school she worked at the Rod Shop in Montague City.

On November 26, 1949 Janet married Donald J. Rooney at Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield, officiated by Rev. Casey.

Janet enjoyed growing her large vegetable gardens year after year and spending time in the back yard pool all summer long. Janet and Don were square dancers for over 40 years and after Don retired in 1987, they wintered at their home in Florida.

Surviving family members include six children; John Rooney and his wife Carol of Greenfield, David Rooney and his wife Brenda of Montague, Karen Rooney of Greenfield, Thomas Rooney and his wife Terri of Greenfield, Susan Rooney and her life partner Randy Smith of Turners Falls, and Laura Rooney of Greenfield. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great grandchildren, several nieces and a nephew.

In keeping with Janet’s wishes there are no services. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
