Jacqueline Althea (Coe) Clark passed away in the early hours of Saturday morning, August 12, after a long illness, less than a month shy of her 76th birthday. She was born in New Britain, Connecticut, on September 6, 1947. She graduated from Newington High School in 1965, and Bay Path Junior College in 1967. She grew up in Connecticut, lived in Ohio, and settled in Massachusetts, on the farm in Apple Valley, Ashfield, when she married Aaron Clark in 1972. She was the secretary at Sanderson Academy in Ashfield for over 30 years.
Jacki loved iced coffee and the Red Sox, her family and friends, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou, Neil Young and CSNY, the Eagles and the Rolling Stones, the Celtics and the Patriots, James Taylor (at Tanglewood on the 4th of July the most), the Glengarry Bhoys, the ocean, the beach, the sun, sea turtles, hummingbirds, butterflies, and the color blue. Her favorite flowers were gardenias, lilacs, rose of sharon (althea), blue irises, and the magnolia tree. She taught her children how to sew, and taught us that if you can make it yourself, you can have anything you want. She sewed clothes and quilts and many other things, she did cross stitch and embroidery, designed patterns that won awards, made mosaics and jewelry and barettes and anything else that she wanted to try, she grew plants (mostly the kind that you don't have to remember to water that often) and painted things, doodled in the margins of every piece of paper, had impeccable handwriting. She walked barefoot everywhere, from the beach to the snow, and wore flip flops if shoes were required. She loved Bull Durham and a League of Their Own, quesadillas at Bueno y Sano and Diemand's turkey soup, mojitos or Captain's and coke, Captain’s and anything, grilled cheese and chicken soup (the kind with the flavor egg) on snow days, raspberries, cheesecake, lobster rolls, and a good rare steak. Leftover Italian wedding salad, and pumpkin pie for breakfast. Going shopping for Red Sox stuff in Enfield and out to lunch, always soup salad and breadsticks at Olive Garden. Fried dough with maple cream at the Ashfield Fall Festival, and if someone asked what you’re supposed to do with maple cream, would reply “eat it with a spoon”.
I don't know how to end this because I could go on and on...so as she used to say, happy trails to you, until we meet again. We will miss her forever.
A celebration of life will be held in Ashfield on October 9th. Time, place, and details will be posted on the Clark Brothers Orchards Facebook page in near future.
