Hermes S. Maniatty, 94 , passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

Born in Greenfield on April 9, 1929 to Steven P. and Susan (Samaras) Maniatty, both of Greece and owners of the Maniatty Candy Shop. Herm was the 9th of 13 children.

He was a graduate of Greenfield High School, class of ’48 and then graduated from American International College in 1951, where he played four years on the football team.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1955 having attained the rank of SSGT. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

On September 4, 1955 he was married to Cornelia “Connie” Avdoulos of North Adams, the start of 58 years of marriage.

Herm formed HSM, Inc under which he owned and operated the Corner Cupboard, Herm’s Restaurant and Bricker’s Restaurant with his wife, children, and eventually where his grandchildren held their first jobs.

He was a supporter of local businesses and was a contributing member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Holyoke. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, dining at the best restaurants, and spent his retirement traveling New England to be at his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He will be remembered for his work ethic, his love for his family, his great sense of humor, and as a respected business owner.

Herm is survived by his loving and devoted family; daughter Susan Watters of Groton, MA, grandson Robert Watters of Groton, MA, granddaughter Sara Kirby and her husband Ryan of Lutherville, MD, granddaughter Alexandra Watters of Greenfield, MA, grandson Simeon Maniatty of Turners Falls, MA, great grandson Jackson Kirby of Lutherville, MD, his sister-in-law Elizabeth Maniatty of Simsbury, CT, and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Herm was predeceased by his wife Connie, son Steven, sister Anne, brothers Peter, Connie, George, Phil, John, Ash, Arthur, Christopher, Leo, Michael, and Perry as well as sisters-in-law Connie, Claire and Betty.

Services will be held Saturday, October 14 at the Sts. James and Andrews Episcopal Church, at the corner of Federal and Church Sts in Greenfield. There will be a visiting hour from 10 am until 11 am, followed by the funeral service celebrated by Rev. Fr. Thomas J Cokotis, Pastor of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Burial services will be private.
