George H. Bates, 84, of Adams Rd., passed away Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021 at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility.
George was born in Greenfield on December 15, 1937 the son of Charles H. and Helen (Mason) Bates. After graduating from Greenfield High School, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
He was stationed aboard the USS Borie DD # 704, patrolling the Mediterranean. While serving George was able to visit Greece and Spain while the ship was in port.
Following his honorable discharge and returning home, he was married to Joan (Moore) on June 12, 1960. They celebrated over 61 years of marriage.
George became a union carpenter and early on worked for Daniel O’Connell and Sons, and later for A.R. Green Construction where he retired from in 1995.
George loved sports and was a big fan of all the Boston teams; Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots. He also enjoyed coaching sports and could be seen on the field coaching Little League Baseball, Bath Ruth Baseball, girls softball, and youth hockey. In his retirement he discovered golf and that became his favorite pastime. He loved being out on the course and the challenge it presented.
His family and friends remember how much of a jokester and comedian he was and no one was safe from his sense of humor.
His loving family includes his wife Joan, son Kevin M. Bates of Conway, daughters Heidi J. Vassallo of Greenfield, Trisha A. Mohr of Deland, FL, grandchildren; Michael Powell II, Kimberly Powell, Christopher Vassallo , Tyler Bates, Kara Bates, Laura Cummings, Nicole Savage, Misty Moody, Brandy Vassallo and Brenden Mohr, and 15 great grandchildren.
It was George’s wish that there be no services.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested memorial donations be made to the Franklin County Regional Dog Shelter, 10 Sandy Lane, Turners Falls, MA 01376
