Gail Bissell Obituary

Gail A.(Smith) Bissell 84, of Heath stage Terrace passed away unexpectedly on February 16th 2022 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield Massachusetts.

Gail was born in Yonkers New York on April 30th 1937 the daughter of Edith and Clyde Smith.

She was married to Verne Bissell on July 16th, 1955 they had 66 years of a beautiful marriage.

Gail was a dedicated, devoted mother, Aunt and grandmother. She treasured her grandchildren and embraced her great-grandchildren her favorite role was being a "Nana".

She had a vivacious personality and an eye for creating beautiful oil paintings of which she painted many. Throughout her life Gail was devoted to her community and their needs; such as volunteering at the local food pantry’s, serving on the Wells Fund Committee along with being a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, a Masonic youth service organization.

Gail was the owner and operator of the former Mohawk Manor Rest Home in Shelburne Falls Massachusetts the home was a family business that lasted for three generations and Gail was proud to carry on the family tradition when it was her time. The emotional connections she made with the residents at the home was what she loved the most. It was difficult at times but the care and compassion she shared made all the difference in the world to the residents and the staff. Her sense of humor helped too. She was a kind, compassionate, reliable and dedicated friend too many she will be greatly missed.

Her loving family she leaves behind includes her husband Verne Bissell, her son Dr. Mark C. Bissell and his wife Sara of Union, West Virginia, her sister Phyllis Herrera of Charlemont, Massachusetts, her grandchildren; Jakob Bissell and his wife Samantha of Three Forks, Montana, Brittany Bissell of Richmond, Vermont, Luke Bissell and his wife Jordan of Greenfield, Massachusetts, Joshua and Emily of South Carolina, 2 great-grandsons Hudson and Anderson, 1 great granddaughter Finley, nieces, nephews and cousins along with many many friends.

Gail was sadly  predeceased by a son James T. Bissell on March 13th 1990 and daughter Stacy E. Bissell on January 2nd 2017.

A Celebration of Gail's life will be held at a later date to be announced by the family.
