Doris E. (Purington) Johnson, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 26, 2024.
Doris was born in Greenfield, MA on August 11, 1932 the daughter of Arthur and Geneva (Call) Purington of Colrain, MA. She attended local schools includingArms Academy and the Franklin County Public Hospital Nursing School where she began her nursing career. She was a caregiver throughout her life and it brought her great joy to provide for others. In 1961, she moved to Chicago, IL and was an emergency room nurse at the Cook County Hospital for 19 years. Her experience in a large city hospital was complete with all types of trauma and emergencies. While living in Chicago, she met her future husband, Charles H. Johnson who she married in 1963. Doris and Charles were married for 49 years until his death in 2012. In 1980, the family moved to Buckland and she became a staff nurse at the former Franklin Nursing Home in Greenfield, MA.
At home she cherished family, her garden and being outside in the natural surroundings. She also enjoyed traveling and had a great love for animals. Doris attended the First Baptist Church of Colrain.
Survivors include her five children; sons Charles N. Johnson, William C. Johnson, and Brian E. Johnson, all of California, daughters Renata T. Johnson of NYC and
Rebecca H. Johnson-Baker of Twain Harte, CA, seven grandchildren, brother Sam Purington of Buckland and sister Virginia Fellows of Warwick, MA.
