Clarence “Spike” Edward Wheeler, 79, passed peacefully on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at Baystate Franklin Medical Center. He was surrounded by children and grandchildren.
Spike was born January 15, 1944, to Leland and Sylvia (Long) Wheeler of Shelburne, MA. He graduated from Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls. His lifetime work, as a finish carpenter, may be found in many buildings across West County.
He enjoyed many parts of his life in West County; puttering and working around the farm in East Colrain, the land, his David Brown tractor, snowmobiling, his antique wooden Chris Craft boat, his many years spent at Harriman Reservoir, his model trains, and his family.
Spike is survived by his wife Reita (Sell) of forty-five years, his children; Laurie Wheeler (life partner Laura) of Shelburne Falls MA, Larry Wheeler and (wife Cheri) of Northfield MA, Lee Wheeler (wife Tammy) of Colrain MA, Leslie Wheeler of Gill MA, stepson Kenneth Payne of Bradenton, FL, stepdaughter Charleen Payne of Colrain MA, eight grandchildren; Austin Wheeler, Stephen Wheeler, Cooper Grace, Kyle Wheeler, Karl Wheeler, Nicole Gaspar, Scott Coombs, and Jaden Payne, and, seven great grandchildren; Addalyn, Bentley, Charlie, Leland, Frank, Ruthie and Lucy, several nieces and nephews, and, of course, his beloved dog Gatsby.
He was predeceased by his sister, Ruthe (Wheeler) Jubinville, and his niece, Dee Letourneau.
