Betsy Walters Obituary

Betsy (E.E. Graham) Walters, 97, passed away in the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, ME on February 12, 2020.  She was born on May 22, 1922 in Greenfield, MA, the daughter of Leon and Bessie (Maxam) Graham.  She was the wife of Robert J. Walters who predeceased her on November 6, 2001.

Betsy graduated from Greenfield High School and Becker Junior College.  She was employed as a medical secretary for the Institute of Living in Hartford, CT after graduation and before entering the military.

Betsy joined the Army during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific in the office of the Air Surgeon in Hollandia, Leyte and Manila.  She was in the back lines following Gen. MacArthur.  It was here that she met her future husband.  She carried her parachute home after the war and had her wedding gown made out of it.  When asked why she joined the service, she said that her parents had no boys and she felt it was her duty to serve her country.  She was extremely proud of being a veteran.

Betsy was formerly of Shelburne Falls, but lived for the past 20 years in Wells, ME.  Maine was always her first love and she was known to take a dip in the ocean even during the winter months. She considered the ocean her soul.

She leaves behind two children, Kathleen Richardson and husband Doug of South Deerfield and Richard (Skip) Walters and wife Jean of Wells, ME.  She also leaves eight adoring grandchildren: Steven and Travis Richardson, Shane, John, Michael and Julie Walters, Jennifer Miles and twelve great-grandchildren. A daughter, Terri (Locke) predeceased her in 2004.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 20th at Smith Kelleher Funeral Home, 40 Church St., Shelburne Falls.  There will be a calling hour from 11-12, services at 12:00 and burial in Arms Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Veterans Home, 290 US Route 1, Attn:  Activities Fund, Scarborough, ME  04074
