Arthur Allerton Green, Jr. passed away suddenly on November 16, 2023 at home in Shelburne, MA. He was born in Hartford, CT on February 18, 1943, the son of Arthur A. Green, Sr. and Dorothy May (Field) Green. Arthur is survived by his sister, Judi Truesdell; his brother, Mason Green (Magdalena Valenzuela), a niece, four nephews, and three grand-nieces and nephew.
Green lived in Connecticut until the family bought a farm in Shelburne, MA in 1946. During his childhood he worked on the dairy farm, built model ships, and had a keen interest in biology. He often got up at 4:00 am to walk through the woods to a beaver pond to observe the wildlife before going to school.
During High School Green achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He joined the First Congregational Church and participated in the Youth Group. Later in life, he joined the choir and served for a few years as a deacon. Each summer, he spent a week or two at a cottage at Beach Pond in Exeter, RI. Green graduated from Arms Academy in 1961 and Blackburn College in 1965 (MS in Biology). During the summers, we worked as a counselor at Camp Sloane in Lakeville, CT.
After college, Green went to Naval OCS and spent the next three years serving on ships off the coast of Vietnam. During R&R, he traveled extensively in SE Asia and Japan. Subsequently, he served in the Naval Reserves for a number of years, reaching the rank of Lt. Commander.
After leaving active duty in 1969, Green began studying wildlife biology at UMass, after which he joined the Peace Corp and worked in that field in Arli NP in Burkina Faso and Penjari NP in Benin. While studying at UMass., he was scoutmaster for Troop 22 in Shelburne. He led numerous 50-mile hikes on the Long Trail in VT and took scouts canoeing in northern MN and Ontario, Canada.
In 1980 Green began working for international organizations including the UN and FAO. During the ensuing 15 years, his work took him to the Central African Republic (twice), Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Cameroun. When funding for conservation projects dried up, he moved to Hiawassee, GA where for two years he wrote research papers for publication. He moved back to Shelburne, MA in 1995 where he spent the remainder of his life. He worked for several different companies until he retired in 2021 at the age of 78. Throughout his life Green was an avid birder and wildlife photographer. He kept a daily journal and was an avid reader with wide-ranging interests.
A memorial service will be held at Smith-Keller Funeral Home at 40 Church Street, Shelburne Falls at 1:30 pm on December 2nd. A reception will follow at the Shelburne Congregational Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Shelburne or to a favorite charity.
