Donald M. (Don) McBride

Donald M. McBride, 96, of Old Greenfield Rd., died at home on Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

     Don was born on August 15, 1921 in New Germany, Nova Scotia a son of Russell and Mabel McBride. He graduated from the former Arms Academy as a member of the class of 1938.

     He wanted to enlist in the US Navy but they were not taking foreigners. He was drafted by the US Army and became a US citizen. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 133rd Infantry, 34th Division. His service included tours in the European Theater.

     On May 15, 1950 he was married the former Helen (Calder) and they were together for 64 years until Helen’s passing on June 17, 2014.

     Don worked for Western Mass Electric for 45 years, starting out as a maintenance man and moving up the ranks retired as Supervisor of the Cabot Station in Gardner Falls.

     Don died in his home which was his final wish. He was a quiet man who loved to go hunting with his son Rodney and grandsons Chris and Brian. He loved long walks and sitting outside in his chair watching the world go by.

     He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Shelburne for most of his life and was very active in the Grange.

     Don is survived by his sons; Rodney and his wife Ann of Shelburne, Barry and his wife Eva of Bakersfield, CA, Dennis and his wife Barbara of Newmarket, NH, six grandchildren; Jonathan, Joshua, Kayla, Barry Jr., Brian and Christopher, five great grandchildren; Camron, Gavin, Evangeline, Connor and Alexander, and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves Donna McBride and Roxana Racz who he thought of fondly.

     He was predeceased by his 12 siblings.

     A memorial service will take place Saturday, June 30 at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church of Shelburne. Burial will follow in East Shelburne Cemetery with an Honor Guard to present military honors.

     There are no calling hours.
