Susan A. (Sue) Berry

Susan (Sue) Ann Berry, age 71 died unexpectedly at her home in Hatfield, MA on March 4, 2025.

            She was born September 23, 1953 in Adams, MA, the daughter of William and Pearl (Briggs) Pfister. She grew up in Adams and attended local schools. She attended Berkshire Community College and received an Associates degree in physical education and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts in 1987. At a time when not many women enrolled in the field of Engineering, she excelled and graduated at the top of her class.

            Shortly after graduation she was the first woman hired by the Massachusetts Highway department as a bridge engineer. She was known and respected for her hard work and her belief that every project should be completed the “correct” way. There were no short cuts. Just a well thought out plan and an efficient process.

           She approached everything she did with an engineer’s mind. She taught herself how to build cabinets, operate heavy equipment, tear down and rebuild a building or a tractor, learn about the birds visiting her feeders, become a home chef – she was a force that could not be deterred, independent and confident.

Sue married the love of her life, G. Flint Berry on December 1, 1998. He predeceased her January 30, 2017.

            After retirement, Sue and Flint purchased several properties and ran a marina in Catskill New York.

She leaves behind her two step children Craig  Berry and Jonathan Berry, both of Greenfield and their families.

            A graveside service will be held Monday March 22, 2025 at 2:00 at Bradstreet Cemetery, Depot St., Hatfield, Ma
