Harvey W. Metzler, Jr.

     Harvey W. Metzler, Jr., 92, of Chapman St., died peacefully at home on June 23, 2017.

     He was born in Greenfield on March 6, 1925 the son of Harvey W. and Irene (Peterson) Metzler. He attended Greenfield schools and was a graduate of Greenfield High School as a member of the class of 1943.

     Following graduation, Harvey was inducted into the US Navy on June 28, 1943 and served as an Aviation Electronics Technician’s Mate until his Honorable Discharge on May 18, 1946. While in the service he also attended Wright Jr. College and the University of Houston for electronics training.

     In 1946, Harvey was married to Virginia (Peterson) of Norfolk, Virginia.

     Harvey retired from the Western Mass. Electric Company in 1987 after 30 years of service. He was the Superintendent of Electric Stations and Supervisor of Distribution Engineering in the Franklin Hampshire District.

     His interests outside of his career included musical instrument construction and repair, wood working, machine tools, welding, skiing, camping and photography. He served on the Troop 2 troop committee for the Boy Scouts of America, served as vice president of the Western Mass. Cystic Fibrosis Chapter and was a 60 year member of the Second Congregational Church.

     Harvey’s survivors include his wife of over 70 years, Virginia (Langston) Metzler, a son William Craig Metzler and his wife Amy, daughter Janice Fisk and husband Dennis, granddaughter Krista and husband Gian, great granddaughters Layla and Arya, grandson Jason, great grandchildren Jacob and Mila, nieces Amy Metzler Clough of Charlemont and Jane Sanders of Connemara, Ireland.

     He was predeceased by a son Kurt D. Metzler on May 12, 2004.  

     It was Harvey’s request that there not be any services.
