Thomas R. Goodwin

June 1, 1934 ~ October 3, 2017 (age 83) 83 Years Old


    (Ret.) Major Thomas R. Goodwin, 83, passed away on October 3, 2017.

     He was the son of Roland and Ellen Wareham Goodwin and graduated from Chicopee High School in 1952.

     In 1954 he entered the US Army and retired in 1976 with the rank of Major. He served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam.

     He obtained an MBA from William and Mary College and taught at the college level.

     He loved singing, teaching, playing bridge and was active in the community. He served on the Greenfield Council on Aging, served as chaplain of the DAV and was a member of the United Church of Bernardston, Republican Lodge of Masons, the Mount Sugarloaf Lodge, and the Cairo Shriners of Vermont. He also served as a long time volunteer at the Greenfield Veterans Clinic.

     Thomas is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol Nowill Goodwin, and his daughter Melodie Goodwin, both of Greenfield, a brother Harry of Texas and a sister Mary Filak of South Carolina.

     Visiting hours will be Tuesday, October 10 from 2:00 pm to 4:00pm at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St., Greenfield. A Masonic Evergreen service will begin at 3:30 pm followed by a DAV memorial. Immediately following the visiting hours, a Celebration of Thomas’ life will be held at the Greenfield Elks Lodge.

     A graveside service with full military honors will take place Wednesday, October 11 at 11:00 am at Forestdale Cemetery, 304 Cabot St., Holyoke, MA 01040

     In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
