Norman W. Ward, Sr. died Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Poet's Seat Health Care Center in Greenfield.

Norm was born in Pelham, MA on July 31, 1925 the son of Eugene and Dorothy (Paige) Ward. He attended Pelham Schools and graduated from Amherst High School.

He enlisted in the US Navy and served with the Seabees from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He was stationed in Ventura, California where he boarded a troop ship that brought him to Guam, Saipan and Okinawa.

Upon his return from the service, Norm was employed by the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in the preventive maintenance department from 1947 to 1950. From 1950 to 1970 he was a delivery driver for the Armour Meat Co. in Northampton and later was a meat cutter in their Springfield location.

Norm then returned to UMass as a grounds supervisor and later retired as the Housing Forman of the North Village Apartments in 1987.

Norm was married to Anita (Billiel) in 1953.

He was a member of the Turners Falls Moose Lodge # 997 from 1985 to 2009 and had lived on 2nd Street in Turners for 33 years.

Survivors include a son Norman Jr., and his wife Sandy of Colrain, a daughter Cheryl Lanoue of Bernardston, step-children: George Holmes Jr. of Gill, Judith White of Claremont, NH, Jean Green of Stoddard, NH, Patricia Perella of Monson, Fay Mesic of Northfield, Linda Lyons of Turners Falls and Leslie Holmes of Turners Falls, a sister Alice Campbell and her husband Roland of Pelham, six grandchildren; Jeffrey Lanoue, Caralyn Lanoue Curtis, Christopher Lanoue, Kevin Ward and Laura Ward, five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Norm was predeceased by a brother Donald and a sister Jean Ward as well as step-children Sheila Carlisle and Gary Holmes.

A graveside service will take place Friday October 7 at 3:00 pm at the Valley Cemetery, North Valley Rd., Pelham, MA
