Douglas George Stotz, 79, of Greenfield died on December 10, 2016 at his home in Greenfield.

Doug was born on New Years Day 1937 at the Farren Memorial Hospital in Montague City, the son of Edward and Florence (Huntoon) Stotz. Raised in Riverside Gill, he attended the Riverside Grammar School, Turners Falls High School (Class of 1954) and Mt. Hermon School (Class of 1955).

Shortly after graduation from Mt. Hermon, he attended a Greenfield Military Band concert where he met a Greenfield High School Senior named Frances “Princy” Birt. They were married June 7, 1958 and celebrated their 58th anniversary this year.

Doug went on to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute from which he graduated in 1959 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and a Captain of the Track and Field team where he was a sprinter. In 2001 he was elected to the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.

Following graduation he returned to the area where he took over his father’s electrical contracting business, Stotz Electric. He successfully owned and operated the business until he retired from it in 1992. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Massachusetts as well as a Licensed Master Electrician.

Sports and the outdoors were passions throughout his life. Beyond his exploits on the football field for TFHS and Mt. Hermon and on the Track for WPI, he was an avid tennis player for half a century. He and Princy were active members of the Greenfield Tennis Club and were among the original members of the Brattleboro Indoor Tennis Club where he served on the Board of Directors. Their tennis friends were many of their closest lifelong friends. Doug was self-taught in Ice Hockey and played several years in the Greenfield Mens Hockey League. He coached his sons’ teams in the Franklin County Hockey Association and served as scheduler for the organization. He also was a devoted sailor and later windsurfer. His catamarans and windsurfers were a familiar sight in Barton Cove.

Doug was a former member of the Greenfield Rotary Club and dedicated member of St. James Episcopal Church from which he received the St. James Cross in 2011.

He and Princy moved to Factory Hollow in 1986 where they enjoyed 30 years together in a beautiful spot along the Falls River.

Doug is survived by his wife and three children; Kristine Stotz Langdon, of Dedham, MA, Douglas Birt Stotz, of Wayland, MA, and Mark Edward Stotz, of Easthampton, MA, four grandchildren; James Langdon, Rory Langdon, Marie Stotz, and Caroline Stotz. He also leaves his daughters-in-law, Lynne Stotz and Kristen Cameron-Stotz, his brother Kerwin “Bud” Stotz of Charlottesville, VA, sister-in-law Dorothy O’Riley Stotz of Berlin, MD, several nieces and nephews and his lifelong best friend, Fred Oakes of Greenfield. His brother Edward C. Stotz predeceased him earlier this year.

Services for Doug will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 17 at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenfield with a reception to follow at Terrazza Restaurant at the Country Club of Greenfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either St. James Episcopal Church, 8 Church St., or Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., both in Greenfield, MA 01301
